How to name your collections for SEO?

Method, examples and mistakes to avoid to give your Shopify collections clear names, useful for SEO and consistent with your catalog.

SEO of Shopify collections

To properly name a collection, use the term your customers actually use, describe the products grouped together precisely and keep a short title. The name "Scented Candles" is generally more useful than "Our olfactory wonders".

The main keyword should fit in naturally. The visible name, SEO title, URL and description each have a role: aligning them strengthens understanding, but making them the same is not mandatory.

Clarity before creativity

A good name meets three requirements

The name of a collection simultaneously serves the visitor, the search engine and the internal organization of the store. It must therefore remain descriptive, faithful and distinct from other categories.

Understandable immediately

A visitor must anticipate the content before clicking. "Women's Backpacks" indicates a product and an audience. "Urban Escape" may be suitable for a campaign, but lacks precision for a permanent collection.

Complies with the catalog

Don't add "leather", "organic", "French" or "professional" if all products don't deliver on that promise. An inaccurate keyword attracts poorly qualified traffic and weakens trust.

Different from other collections

"Bijoux", "Our jewelry" and "Jewelry collection" compete without clarifying the route. Prefer distinct categories: "Necklaces", "Bracelets" and "Rings" if this structure corresponds to demand.

Quite stable over time

A permanent name avoids URL changes and repeated corrections. Reserve seasonal titles for campaigns that actually have a limited duration.

Search and navigation

Start from intention, not a list of keywords

A collection targets a coherent family of research. Start by identifying what the person wants to browse: a type of product, a use, an audience, a material or an occasion. Then check that your catalog can actually support this page.

Product"Table lamps", "Oversized T-shirts" or "Stone bracelets". This is often the sharpest base.
Usage"Hiking shoes" or "Computer bags" when usage really differentiates the offer.
Public"Men’s watches" or "3-year-old educational games" if targeting helps the choice and corresponds to the products available.

Vigilance point: search volume is not enough. A query that is more precise but consistent with the assortment can attract visitors closer to the purchase than a broad and ambiguous term.

Concrete examples

What name templates to use?

The right level of precision depends on the depth of the catalog. Create a subcollection only if it has enough products, a distinct intention and a logical place in navigation.

Situation Weak name Clearer name Why
Main category Our decorative universe Wall decoration The product is identifiable before clicking.
Distinctive material Natural collection Solid wood tables The material and product are explicit.
Precise use For your adventures Cabin travel bags Usage corresponds to a concrete need.
Temporary selection Favorites Gift ideas for less than €50 The selection criterion becomes verifiable.
Target audience For the little ones Baby clothes The audience and the category are not confusing.
Technical consistency

Name, SEO title, URL and description: four roles

Shopify separates the collection name from its information for search engines. This flexibility allows the user to write without neglecting the snippet displayed in Google.

Name visible

It appears on the page and often in menus. It must be brief, natural and consistent with neighboring labels.

SEO title

It can specify the promise or the store: "Practical cabin travel bags | Brand Name". Avoid stacking variants.

URL

A short handle such as /collections/travel-cabin bags remains readable. If an already indexed URL changes, schedule a redirect and update internal links.

Description

It explains the scope, useful criteria and available choices. It should not become an artificial paragraph composed of repeated keywords.

Shopify presents a separate title and SEO information for each collection. The official documentation also indicates a technical limit of 255 characters for the name, but an available limit is not a recommended length. See Shopify documentation.

To avoid

Mistakes that weaken SEO

Accumulate synonyms

"Bag, luggage, suitcase and travel accessory" does not clarify the page. Choose a main intention and address additional expressions in the description.

Multiply nearby pages

Two nearly identical collections disperse products, internal links, and SEO signals. Merge them if they meet the same need.

Name according to your jargon

An internal code or unknown range name may remain useful to the brand, but add descriptive wording when the visitor cannot guess the product.

Rename without controlling links

Changing a handle can break menus, campaigns or external links. Check the old URL, redirect, breadcrumbs and links between collections.

The name does not compensate for a poorly constructed collection. Product ranking, description, visuals, internal linking and mobile experience also contribute to the quality of the page. For classification mode, consult our guide on manual and automated collections.

Practical application

Six-step method and checklist

The method

  • Inventory existing collections and their products.
  • Associate a main intention with each page.
  • Compare the formulations used by customers.
  • Choose a short, specific and natural name.
  • Align SEO title, URL and description.
  • Control menus, links, redirects and mobile rendering.

Checklist before publication

  • The name describes the products exactly.
  • A visitor understands it without context.
  • The collection stands out from the others.
  • Keyword is not repeated unnecessarily.
  • URL is short and without unnecessary elements.
  • The page has enough products to be useful.
  • Internal links point to the correct URL.
  • The title remains readable on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Shopify Collections Name FAQ

Should you put the exact keyword in the name?

Use it if it describes the collection naturally. A clear variation may be preferable to an exact clumsy expression. Precision and understanding remain a priority.

What length should I choose for a collection name?

There is no universal SEO length. Keep the title short enough for menus and precise enough to avoid ambiguity. A few descriptive words are often enough.

Can we use a creative name?

Yes, especially for a known campaign or range. For a permanent collection, associate it with a descriptive indication if the product is not immediately identifiable.

Do the SEO name and title have to be the same?

No. The visible name can remain very concise, while the SEO title adds useful clarification or the brand name. However, they must aim for the same intention.

Should the brand be included in each name?

Usually not in the visible name. The brand name can be added to the SEO title depending on the available space and strategy, without hiding the main category.

What if two collections target the same keyword?

Check if they actually meet two distinct needs. Otherwise, merge them or reposition one of them to avoid pages that are too close.

Can we change the name of an already indexed collection?

Yes, but distinguish the title change from the URL change. If the URL handle changes, create or check the redirect and fix internal links.

Does SiteQuiVend write the full descriptions?

The formatting of the content provided and the basic SEO are included in the formulas displayed. Complete writing or significant rewriting is offered upon quote.
